Meet the Artist behind Glass and Splinters

Thank you for endeavouring to find out more about Glass and Splinters. If you are curious on how the name came about, I began working with glass in 1985 hence the 'glass' and my husband is a carpenter, therefore 'splinters'. It is such a catchy business name, I haven't wanted to change it!

Glass and Splinters wearable art is created by Lorraine Allan. My aim is to bring to the public a line of wearable art pieces that are so unique from anything available today. I enjoy combining different techniques and materials into one creation. A Glass and Splinters piece may begin with a hand woven cord and flow into a feature of my metalsmithing often creating a bold statement. My handmade lampwork beads are blended into the design of all my pieces.

I am a full time lampwork and jewellery designer and have been creating jewellery and lampwork beads since 1997 in my home studio in Adelaide, South Australia. I have worked with many areas of glass since 1985.

I attended a lampwork bead workshop in 1997 which then led me to enrol in a silversmith course. The course ran for 10 weeks, but I enjoyed it so much I enrolled for another 10 weeks. On the completion of the course I managed to enroll just one more time! I am still eager to further my studies in this area.

I have a very supportive family with 2 sons, Kane and Jake, and my husband Pete. Pete and I worked together in a leadlight business for 16 years, he has now gone back to his carpentry trade and is a long time musician, a drummer. Music is my second love and I really enjoy supporting Pete and his bands, the old dancing shoes often come out!
